No Tricks, Just Treats – 5 Beers For Halloween

MauditeFor Halloween, there isn’t a beer that can hold a candle to Unibroue’s Maudite. This strong Belgian-style Red ale bequeaths a nose of rich malt, orange, wild spices with fragrances of coriander and cloves and floral hop notes with a  flavor that is characterized by a robust maltiness and spiciness that is counterbalanced by an assertive crisp hop finish. Sell your soul to the devil for this wonderful beer. You won’t regret it!

Rogue Double Dead GuyRogue Double Dead Guy – Why mess around with a regular Dead Guy when you can enjoy a big ol’ snifter of the double. Deep amber copper color. Buttery peanut brittle, orange blossom tea aromas follow through to a rich chewy and fruity full body with nice notes of caramel drizzled dried apricot and roasted grains and spice. Finishes with a long, tangy grilled grapefruit and chocolate fade.

Midnight Sun Fallen Angel – From the dark depths of Alaska comes this golden strong ale with a snap.

first brewed on 6-6-6 [JUN 6, 2006], is named in the tradition of Belgian golden strong ales–after the devil himself. The brewery calls this beer their “original sin” because it spawned their 2007 Deadly Sin beer series.

Deep gold in color with tiny, conniving bubbles forming a very thick, meticulous head, this demonic brew possesses an effervescent and crisp body, and tempts the palate with apple, pear and a little earthy mustiness. Its beauty and brightness is angel-like in appearance but the devil in is its strength.

Lost Abbey Witches WitLost Abbey Witch’s Wit – This hellaciously refreshing brew offers tons of esters present in the beer as well as a soft yeast note. This beer has also been spiced with Grapefruit Zest, Orange Peel and Coriander. Each of these is subtly stated so as to not overwhelm the nose of the beer. Most definitely, this first and foremost a wheat ale. You can taste the wheat from start to finish. A faint toasted note from the addition of flaked oats is present in the beer as well. This is a light bodied beer that finishes with a spicy layer in the end. The overall impression should be an easy-to-drink refreshing ale.

SSouthern Tier Pumkingouthern Tier Pumkin – Pumking is an ode to Púca, a creature of Celtic folklore, who is both feared and respected by those who believe in it. Púca is said to waylay travelers throughout the night, tossing them on its back, and providing them the ride of their lives, from whichthey return forever changed! Brewed in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, a time of year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent. Pour Pumking into a goblet and allow it’s alluring spirit to overflow. As spicy aromas present themselves, let its deep copper color entrance you as your journey into this mystical brew has just begun. As the first drops touch your tongue a magical spell will bewitch your taste buds making it difficult to escape. This beer is brewed with pagan spirit yet should be enjoyed responsibly.

What’s your favorite Halloween beer(s)?

Halloween Prose.

Here’s an older post that we figured we’d bring back. Have a fun night!

Hoppy Halloween! Sudsy Samhain! Festive Fall! Merry Malting!

Losing leaves are the nakeding trees. Seasonal yeastwork. Plants’ vascular adapting and converting like sugars during fermentation. Fractal trees and complex flavors. Beer and rain begin to simultaneously increase on the gravities in which they pour. Boos and brews and cloud formations sometimes replaced by just one giant cloud. Dark mornings, darker nights increase. It can be harder to get warmed. But it is welcoming to be near a heat source. Perhaps soon looking forth to the next solstice bringing light back. Spicy seasonals, Oktoberfests, gourd brews, other fruit beers, doppels, dunkels, hearty browns, ambers, and even barleywines. Beware of ghouls and stale piwo. The light will return just as the longer warmer days, but now is the entrance to darker, bolder, and more assertive times. Enjoy the long spells of grey, contracted daylight hours, and even snowfall could conjur the need for items something spicy and robust. Enjoy the life of colorfully distinct seasons in Beervana. The changes we certainly welcomed and find necessary and most importantly, an undeniable excuse to brew, drink, and demand different kinds of beer.

I hope my beer is not a headless one. That would gravely scare me. Unless of course, it is brewed to style. Pumking verticals and eerily anticipating the sun falling beneath the horizon. Some are mused by horror films. The wicks of candles burn and bodies turn. Sweat shirts, sweaters, and cuddling pets. Sometimes it feels this season is the best. Skeleton crops blow in the wind. Spiders. frogs, rats, and others work hard to prepare for the winter. Cold beer now and cold morning soon enough. Trick or treat, smell my feet, give us something good to drink.

Burnside Brewing: Permafrost – is Burnside Brewing Co.’s first winter elixir. It’s a big strong ale brewed with 7 different malts and copious amounts of Columbia and Amarillo hops pillowed in the middle to give this warming brew a chewy complex malt body and a unique fruity juicy hoppiness throughout. You wont want to sip this dangerously strong and tasty beer like you should but pound it . 8.3% abv 77.4 IBU

Burnside Brewing: Peanut Butter Chocolate Alt – A one-off keg of Burnside Brewing’s take on the traditional German-style Alt bier malty and carmelly with reese’s peanut butter cups infused into the beer to complement the creamy body and nutty dry finish. It’s all the favorite flavors of Halloween candy you loved as a kid infused into your favorite adult beverage!

Fort George BreweryNorth V – This year we took another Holiday Icon, The Fruitcake, and designed our Winter Seasonal in its’ honor.
A mash of barley, oats, wheat, rye, rich caramel and honey malts are mildly spiced with Cascade and Saaz hops, fermented with Fort George House Yeast then allowed to condition on hand-splintered, rum inspired oak. A Glase Fruit concoction that includes cherries, pineapple, orange and lemon peel is dissolved into the finished beer to add the final touches.
While designed and bottled to age, we are sure this version of the Fruitcake will not be passed down for generations, but opened and imbibed at many a cheerful gathering. 7.5% abv. IBU’s Hard To Tell

Oakshire Brewing
Big Black Jack (Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter) – Oven roasted pumpkins, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and ginger round out this burly Imperial Porter. Trick…. or Treat?

Lompoc: 2010 Bourbon Barrel Aged Monster Mash

Ninkasi Brewing: PK Ice

A slightly strong golden lager with Ninkasi’s trademark hops.

Widmer Brothers: Nelson O’ Ryely IPA

The latest in the rotator series of IPA’s is made with Rye to coplement the hops with an added rye bread spiciness.

10 Barrel: India Session Ale

A low alcohol session beer you can knock back a few of without getting a buzz but sacrifice none of the hoppy goodness of an IPA.

Ale-O-Ween: Scariest Beers on Tap

Halloween is the festive fall time with imagery of jag-toothed jack-o-lanterns, colorfully decrepit leaves, blazing bonfires, ghostly graveyards, creative costumes, apple bobbing, children’s candy, and fun frights. It is also is a delightful opportunity to partake in some of the year’s best beer. In a season betwixt fresh hops, Oktoberfestivites, and the onslaught of wintry tipples appropriate for cozy fireside sipping, this time rekindles the youthful whimsicalities in adults. Hankering for hellaciously hardy, robustly rounded, and wickedly warming pours of Samhain’s finest offerings, is a special feeling that people in the Northern regions of the Western World might die for. Here in Fearvana, we have the best of all worlds. Pumpkin beers, Oktoberfest Marzens, Freshly hopped harvest beers, and more.

Here’s some scary good beers we’ve picked for this year’s Halloween out on the town, whatever dark path that might lead you down: Read More…

Night of the Living Ales

Zombified beer geeks can seek out delicious brains and mouthwatering beer on Halloween night with a special pub crawl for the undead dubbed Night of the Living Ales: 28th Street Pub Crawl. Like the name suggests it is a hell-raising jaunt along SE 28th Street in Portland making stops at Migration Brewing, Spints Alehouse, Beulahland and Coalition Brewing. Organized by local beer artist Ezra Johnson-Greenough of The New School Beer Blog and internationally acclaimed beer scribe Lisa “The Beer Goddess” Morrison, the event will feature some one-of-a-kind craft beers at each destination. Says Johnson-Greenough, “This strip has become one of my favorite neighborhoods to hang out in and if you haven’t been this is a good opportunity to check out some of these new spots as signing up for a wristband ($5) will get you Happy Hour prices at all the locations not to mention the unique costume contest we will have at each location, plus a trivia grand prize not to mention extremely rare special beers at each stop including one of my own, a Peanut Butter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout I guest brewed at Coalition Brewing!”

The crew looks to make this an annual tradition. For more info you can go to the website ( http://www.nightofthelivingales.com) and order a wristband there or pick one up at any of the pub crawl locations.
