Weekend in Review

Another jam-packed weekend it was for Brewpublicans here in Beervana.

Belmont Station

On Thursdays July 8, Belmont Station, with one of the most impressive calendars for Oregon Craft Beer Month (OCBM), kicked of their fourth annual sour week, known as Puckerfest, with very special event. Billed as a pre-party for the week wilds, Thursday marked the release of Double Mountain’s 2010 Devil’s Kriek. Brewed with orchard cherries grown in Hood River by brewmaster Matt Swihart, attendees were offered free samples of the brewer’s freshly picked fruits as well. Swihart and founding partner Charlie Devereux were in attendance to meet with friends and fans of the brewery. Deep amber bodied and with a well-rounded Brettanomyces yeast character, patrons had the opportunity to do some comparative sampling of this beer beside last year’s rendition. We are convinced that this is Double Mountain’s best one yet.

Also flowing from the stand-up taps at Belmont Station on this night was the Bruery’s Orchard White, a choice Belgian-style witbier brewed with coriander, citrus peel and lavender. Baker City’s Barley Brown’s Hot Blonde Ale brewed with jalapeno peppers was a light and refreshing summer-appropo golden ale exhibiting a welcomed chili spice snap without being too aggressive on the heat. The Hot Blonde won a gold medal at this year’s 2010 NABA and it was easy to see why. A keg we sampled a few weeks ago at The BeerMongers with brewmaster Shawn Kelso, kicked in less than 24 hours.

On Friday July 9, Puckerfest rocked on without missing a beat, this time with three special kegs from Jolly Pumpkin brewing of Dexter, Michigan. These rare pours included Calabaza Blanca, Oro de Calabaza, and Luciernaga. Blanca is, as the name suggests (translates literally as “White Pumpkin”), a white ale brewed in the classic biere blanche tradition and spiced with orange peel and coriander. Like most of the JP brews, it is distinctively tart and very refreshing. The Oro is a a Belgian-style strong ale aged in oak barrels and is brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of special golden ales. In truly JP fashion, Oro is quite peppery and effervescent with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast. The Luciernaga (meaning “firefly”) is another sort of hybrid brew commercially described as an “artisan pale ale brewed in the Grand Cru tradition.” With a hazy golden and carbonic body and medium hop aroma, Luciernaga is accented by the addition of coriander and grains of paradise. Spicy, tart, sour, hoppy, and somehow smooth, this was many people’s favorite of the three. However, it was impossible for us to decide which one we liked best since all three were top notch brews.

Saturday July 10 brought great weather to Portland. The three-straight 90 degree days were finally in the rearview and we were able to enjoy perfect 75-80 degree sunshine. During the day we hung out with the Daily Pull’s Brady Walen and prepped for our interview with Three Sheets alco-median Zane Lamprey who was in town on the last leg of a 53 city stand up comedy and book release tour. We prepared questions for the jokester during the day amidst picking up some special bottled brews to share with him during our interview. We were a little uncertain of how the interview would go. Since Brewpublic is dedicated to craft beer over fraternity party-esque drunkenness, we formulated an interview plan that would allow for an entertaining yet informative interview. Videographer and documentarianist Alison Grayson would capture the interview.

Before meeting with Lamprey, as mentioned, we stocked up on beer for the entertainer from a number of Oregon breweries that we thought any libation lover, not just a craft beer lover would appreciate. These included bottles of Upright Six, Cascade The Vine, Pelican Heiferweizen, Heater Allen Coastal Common, and a six pack of Caldera IPA . Just prior to our scheduled interview time, we dropped by Bailey’s Taproom to enjoy a glass of MacTarnahan’s Lipstinger. At Bailey’s we ran into our friends Bruce and Dave with BS Brewing. They were also preparing to interview Lamprey, just before we were. By the time the interview was to begin, we were already a bit McKenna’d (this is a term Lamprey uses in reference to his college buddy Steve McKenna synonymous with intoxicated). The interview was brief as we motorboated through questions and beers. Lamprey, surprisingly, wasn’t into drinking much off camera. This was understandable since he had a long night ahead of him and had already been cruising around town knocking back avocado daiquiris and other crazy concoctions for his TV show. Basically he had been on a drinking spree since the end of April when his tour kicked off. Still, he was nice enough to try some of the beers we brought before McKenna was called over to shotgun some Caldera IPAs with us.

After we left to allow Lamprey ample time to prepare for his show, we reluctantly departed our beer stash left in the green room and joined the rest of the three-quarters filled Roseland upstairs.  The show started with the ever-drunken McKenna introducing comedian Marc Ryan. Ryan’s content sought humor in STDs, DUIs, and mostly lewd material that teenage beer-bongin’ fratboys might find appealing.  Early in, we were ready to never see McKenna again. We didn’t even muster a chuckle the entire time he was on stage (and we’d been drinking and were in a good mood). Quickly realizing  that homophobia, womanizing, and drinking for the soul purpose of getting loaded were topics bolstering this show, we were in fact able to tolerate the show as long as we did in part because the other folks in the audience paid $25 to be here and, as a courtesy to our hosts, we were waiting for things to improve.  Sadly, they didn’t. Lamprey’s stand up was more fun loving and less lewd, but his go at standup was a little weak.

It was apparent that this show had a devout audience, but it simply wasn’t our cup of tea and jello shots.

Before the show was over, we had to leave for a prior engagement. It was fairly apparent from our interview and the his stage presence that Zane Lamprey doesn’t really care about the geekier side of craft beer. And, fair enough, not all people do. He projects to is the lowest common denominator, which are people who like to party. Granted this is sometimes funny, because let’s face it,  the notion of being drunk or stupid can be humorous, and travel shows where you get to peak in other cultures is at times rather fascinating. But Lamprey’s disparaging, shock-value, anything-for-attention humor was evident when he Tweeted about doing Fondue shots (dropping a shot of melted cheese into a beer and chugging it) with McKenna at the Widmer Gasthaus) reminded us of being kids and seeing that one kid eat an earthworm for a dollar, or  to make a girl scream and get his buddy to laugh. His success, we feel is partly due to his ability to be spontaneous and at times charismatic.  Despite not really enjoying the stand up show,  it was a treat to actually meet Zane Lamprey and wrap with him. Also, the Three Sheets show is rather entertaining and we are sure a lot of people would have loved to been in our shoes. Lamprey’s PR person, Karen was very cool, so big BIG ups to her!

Sunday morning we enjoyed pints of Boneyard Black 13 and Heater Allen Coastal Common at The BeerMongers while watching the final match of the World Cup.With allegiance to neither Spain nor Holland, we somehow found ourselves pulling for Holland purely based on a better craft beer selection. We weren’t the least bit disheartened when Spain ended up winning it all.

The weekend wrapped up with a great party at the Horse Brass pub to celebrate the birthday of three prevalent area beer personalities. Horse Brass founder Don Younger, accomplished beer scribe Lisa “the Beer Goddess” Morrison, and Point Blank Distributing founder Scott Willis. Together this triumvirate of  craft beer prowess celebrated 162 years of life, many of which they’ve each, in their own way, used to champion breweries in Oregon and beyond. A special tap menu of strong and hoppy brews graced the taps like Steelhead Hopasaurus Rex, Caldera Hopportunity Knocks, and Russian River Blind Pig IPA. There was even a band performing some blues numbers that had the legendary publican shaking it by the dance floor. It was a great time with lots of local beer folks like Full Sail brewmaster John Harris, Belmont Station original founder Joy Campbell, current owners Carl and Amy Singmaster, Charles and Teresa Culp, Northwest Brewing News’ John and Linda Norton, Bailey’s Taproom founder Geoff Phillips, and beer fest organizer Preston Weesner. Even Music Millenium founder Terry Currier was in attendance. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun.

“The Vaporizer” Joins Double Mountain’s Year-round Lineup of Beers

Thanks to a recent facility expansion, the team at Hood River’s Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom are now able to deliver even more variety to their already-robust lineup of tasty brews. The brewery is very proud to welcome “THE VAPORIZER” as a full-time brand, joining “Kölsch”, “India Red Ale” (aka “IRA”), and “Hop Lava” Northwest IPA on the year-round roster. Double Mountain brewed “THE VAPORIZER” as a seasonal last summer, and it was so well-received that they’ve decided to promote it to the starting lineup.

“THE VAPORIZER” is a golden-hued Pale Ale that features a beautifully hoppy aroma and flavor. The malt is 100% Gambrinus Pilsner, the brewery’s sweet and supple house malt from Gambrinus Malting in British Columbia. The hops are primarily of the Challenger variety, grown on a single farm in the Yakima Valley. Brewmaster Matt Swihart and his team of brewers dry-hop “THE VAPORIZER” to pump up the hoppy goodness. It’s an appetizingly dry, clean and pure-tasting take on a hoppy Pale Ale. 6.0% alcohol by volume, 50 bittering units.

Double Mountain will be celebrating the widespread release of “THE VAPORIZER” with a Kick-off Party at Apex, the hot new beer bar recently opened by local craft beer impresario Jesse McCann. Come on down Thursday June 10 from 5 to 9pm — the Double Mountain brewers will be hanging out and raffling off Vaporizer t-shirts and other goodies. Apex is located at 1216 SE Division in Portland.

In other news, the Brewery’s popular Taproom will be open for lunch seven days a week all summer, from Memorial Day Weekend on through to September. Summer hours are 11:30am to 11pm Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. They’ll be adding a few new lunch-oriented items to bolster the food menu, too. Be on the lookout for “The Jersey Sub”, “Jamon Torta” and other goodies, including more daily specials, as the season progresses.

Double Mountain Releases Double IPA

Fittingly, Double Mountain‘s new Imperial IPA named Molten Lava, will be released in Portland at Fire on the Mountain.

Word just came in from Double Mountain co-founder Charlie Devereux about the release of the brewery’s new imperial India Pale Ale.

“We’re celebrating our recent facility expansion by brewing a couple batches of “MOLTEN LAVA” Imperial IPA, which has been on hiatus since ’08. Molten is the bigger, meaner older brother of Hop Lava, brewed with same ingredients (pilsner malt, crystal malt, Cascade and Centennial hops) — but lots more of them. Big and yet somehow balanced, in the Double Mountain style. Substantially dry-hopped for superior aroma. 8% ABV, 90+ BU.” says Devereux.

“Please join us for a Release Party at Fire On the Mountain, 1706 E. Burnside, Portland on Thursday, May 13 from 5-9pm. We will be there to enjoy pints with friends and raffle off some DM gear, including limited-edition Molten Lava t-shirts. Music by “Equaleyes” starts at 7pm.”

MOLTEN LAVA will also be our featured beer at the Sasquatch Brewfest in Eugene on May 15, and will be front-and-center at several Washington beer events on our schedule, including:

* Tues 5/18: DM Brewers Night at the Porterhouse Pub, West Seattle

* Wed 5/19: Oregon Brewers Night at the Naked City Taproom, Seattle

* Wed 5/19: DM Brewers Night at the Green Frog Acoustic Pub, Bellingham

Double Mountain’s Good Idea

Double Mountain's Bonne Idee

As you can probably tell from looking at the Brewpublic events calendar, there’s a LOT going on tonight. Plus, in Portland, you can expect the city to be pumped for the Trailblazers to win. If not, season over. Whether or not you consider yourself part of the Rip City Uprise, you can still raise up a glass of Double Mountain‘s latest Bonne Idee (which translates to “Good Idea”) at Saraveza.  Here is the first opportunity for Rip Citizens to quaff DM’s entry for Saturday’s Portland Cheers to Belgian Beers event. In addition to this winning brew, you can also try a special blended cherry rendition as well.

DM co-founder Charlie Devereux, says “We’ll be previewing this beautiful new Saison in advance of Portland’s Cheers to Belgian Beers festival. Chef Spence (Spence Lack, lead pasty chef at Saraveza) will be sharing some handmade boudin blanc from the kitchen. Get there early to sample an extra-special treat: a 30L keg of “Bonne Idee Avec Kriek”, which is the regular Bonne Idee blended 85/15 with Devil’s Kriek 2010, from the maturation tank.”

Prost!

Saraveza is located at 1004 N. Killingsworth in Portland, Oregon. This event  will take place April 29, 2010 6-9pm. Beer supplies are limited, so get there on time, dude!

If you happen to be near The Dalles, Oregon on this same evening, Double Mountain will be kicking off a great new craft beer pub called Clocktower Ales with several DM treats and prizes. The Clocktower Ales is located 311 Union Street, The Dalles Oregon. This event will last from 6-8pm.

Double Mountain, one of the best breweries in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, has just informed us of their third anniversary party (you have to say “par-tay” when it’s this cool).

Double Mountain co-founder Charlie Devereux says “Come on down to Double Mountain and help us celebrate three years of fantastic beers, tasty fare and good times with friends. We pay homage to our great family of fans every March with a big blowout party… It’s our way of saying thanks for supporting us all the year round.”

Ale-ianAs of this past Monday, Belmont Station‘s Bigger, Badder, Blacker Beer Week has been in full effect. Perfect for the throes of winter, now there’s no need to feel let down after the end of your big New Years celebration. The Belmont boys and girls are bringing out barrels of big bold brews to blow you away. As a special treat, it has just been announced that Double Mountain will be unveiling their first Imperial Stout in the Portland market.

IMPERIAL CHAOS

Known around the Columbia Gorge as “a badass Imperial Stout“, Imperial Chaos is the first Double Mountain brew by Kyle Larsen. A good friend of Brewpublic, Kyle formerly brewed at Full Sail, and was a keg slinger at Belmont Station.

Double Mountain's Kyle LarsenLarsen, the beer’s architect and brewer, incorporated a blend of dark malts including chocolate, Carafa, Special B and roasted barley to  deliver a frontier of  complexity in both aroma and flavor. Bumped with light and dark Candi sugar, and buoyed by plenty of bittering hops, this is one of the most anticipated behemoths of the new year.

Weekend in Review

The past weekend could have been one of the best beer weekends to date. But to be perfectly honest the memory is a tad jogged. Down at the Holiday Ale Fest in Pioneer Square, it was amazing how many friends and brewquaintences you can run into, and even better, it’s great to meet new people and get their perspective on beer and life (which to us is pretty much synonymous). Laymen and brewers clicked their plastic HAF mugs amidst intermittent roars that rumbled through like “the wave” at a baseball game. As always, it is essential for the craft beer enthusiast to get down under the tents early. In fact, our weekend really started on Wednesday, as the organizers of the HAF did a nice job of preparing for the swarms of festivalgoers by adding this extra day.

Jeff Alworth, Vasilios Gletsos, and Preston Weesner at Holiday Ale FestWhenever there’s a cool festival in town, the fixture beer outfits around the city step up their game as well offering a great line-up of seasons. Between our few sessions at the Ale Fest, we made a few essential stops to Saturday morning crowds line up for opening round at HAFthe Horse Brass pub to pull back from the mayhem that would inevitable ensue down at Pioneer Courthouse Square. On Friday we also happened over to New Old Lompoc’s 5th Quadrant SideBar to meet with event staff coordinator Amy Casanova. She and the other nice folks at Lompoc helped Brewpublic raise nearly $800 for start-up community radio station KZME during our Cocoa Hop. We are grateful for Amy and Lompoc’s contribution in this noble cause, and also to all the brewers and chocolaters who gave of themselves, their time, and their products.

Cocoa HopWhile at the 5th Quadrant we witnessed the brewers and Green Bottling put the yummy seasonal C-Son’s Greetings into 22-ounce bombers. We were also reminded of Lompoc’s upcoming 8 Malty Nights event coming up on the 11th to kick off Chanukah.

Green Bottling's Mike Weksler at New Old Lompoc

Further north, we found ourselves over the border in Vancouver, Washington to pick up some essentials at By the Bottle and check out the collaboration brewing of Salmon Creek Brewpub‘s owner/brewer Larry Pratt with Seattle brewstar Tom Munoz. Munoz, a former brewer with Silver City teamed up with Pratt to put together a one-of-a-kind pale ale that should be ready to drink at Salmon Creek in a few weeks. See you there!

Salmon Creek's Larry Pratt (left) and brewer Tom MunozLater on Friday, we had a blast over at Belmont Station for a meet the brewer night with Bear Republic head brewer Peter Kruger. The Healdsburg, California brewer, we found out, has roots in Oregon brewing. (l to r) Double Mountain's Charlie Devereux, Belmont Station's Carl Singmaster, and Bear Republic's Peter KrugerKruger was one of the early brewers at Full Sail in Hood River. Former Full Sail brewer Charlie Devereux of Double Mountain was on hand to say hello to his old friend and greet him with a growler of DM’s delicious Fa La La La La winter ale.Bear Republic’s delicious array of specialty and mainstay brews were the highlight of the night, and at the front and center was a Clobberskull wine barrel aged strong ale brewed with 10% split peas. Apparently the beer has a great history, and is of a recipe revitalized in Randy Mosher‘s pioneering book Radical Brewing.

Mountain People's Tim EnsignWhile at Belmont Station, we also meet with Michael Branes of Migration Brewing, one of Portland’s newest breweries. Branes, who worked for some time at Mountain Peoples Distribution, was join by fellow Mountain People’s Oregon sales manager Tim Ensign, who was pouring samples Bear Republic brews as well.

Migration brewer and founder Michael Branes (left) with his dadSaturday, as blogged about earlier found us back under the hearkening tents at 11AM stat for twitterworthy special tappings of select Bear Republic beers like the Trebuchet, a Belgian trippel aged in 100-year-old cognac barrels and two special fruited “The Grizz” super brown ale–one with nectarines and another with blackberries–to accompany the might Old Baba Yaga that was kickin’ ass since Wednesday. The boozier than all ungodly sin Trebuchet was the first thing to hit my stomach on this fair day. A brewer friend said it was too much “nail polish” for him, but to me, I rendered it my breakfast of champions. Several other wonderful beer rounded out my HAF weekend. I have to admit this was the best one yet. In fact, despite others’ gripes, I honestly didn’t experience on dud in the lot.

Trebuchet and Nectarine Grizz...After escaping the mob scene that was Pioneer Courthouse Square, we trudged off some of the liver burn by hoofing a few miles home to Southeast. We were not extinguished yet. There was still Green Bottling‘s holiday party at the cozy Horse Brass. Here, several local brewers raised a tall one to the great year and to Jack and Mike‘s successful year of bottling up some of Oregon’s finest like Lompoc, Full Sail, and Laurelwood. After just a few more lighter beers to rehydrate (Full Sail and Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ales), this one was in the bag.

Lompoc's Dave Fleming (left) and Alchemy's Jason McAdamSunday was relatively mellow, save for a few brews shared with fellow blogger D.A. of Beer Around Town. All said and done, I think I may just hybernate until the ’10 Barley Wine and Big Beer Fest.
